San Clemente Car Show

The San Clemente Car Show is held on Avenida Del Mar which is the main shopping street in town that runs from El Camino Real down to the pier.  The street is closed and over 300 high quality show cars line both sides of the street.  The quality of the cars is unbelievable!  Even if you’re not into awesome cars you’ll enjoy the people watching, food and live music.  The place can really get packed so a free shuttle is available from the San Clemente High School parking lot.  The show is hosted by the San Clemente Downtown Business Association. For more information contact them at 949-218-5378 or or check out their web page at

Office Chair Races

The office chair races start off the 4th of July holiday with the chaos of a fraternity style party/event on Avenida Rosa near Ola Vista a few streets south of Avenida Del Mar.  Competitors must start with, or at least include, an office chair in the construction of their racer.  Heats begin around 8 am and at least one race has all the competitors racing at the same time.  Spectators line the curbs several people deep, and a great place to watch is the left hand turn where a concrete cross gutter causes some great wipeouts.  Plenty of water balloons thrown from the balconies enhance the action.  The organizers claim it is the oldest continuously running office chair race in the world.  The racing kind of fisels out before noon. 4th of July Fireworks Show

The Fourth of July fireworks display brings thousands of spectators to the beach when the fireworks are shot off of the pier.   The show begins at 9:00 pm and lasts till about 9:30.  If you sit close to the pier the fireworks are in sync with the music.  People crowd the beaches from North Beach to State Park.  Good luck finding parking, it is best to plan on a long walk.  It is definitely a local tradition to be on the beach for the fireworks show.

San Clemente Ocean Festival

The Ocean Festival billed as “The Greatest Show on Surf” spans two days and is usually scheduled for the third weekend in July.  The festival includes professional lifeguard competitions of swimming, paddling, and the hugely popular dory races (if the surf is big, it is exciting). The local kids and adults get into the competition with swimming, beach running, surfing, and stand up paddling events.  Both days start off with a pancake breakfast to benefit the Jr. Lifeguard Program.  There are lots of food booths, exhibitors, live music, dancing and a rubber duck race for charity.  To top it off the pier is lined with classic woody surf wagons.  Every local makes an appearance at the ocean festival.  More information at
